Repeal Real ID Act

As of April 30, 2025, all 50 US states are REAL ID compliant. The Real ID Act was signed into law in 2005, and while there were initial delays and extensions, all states have now met the requirements.

What Is Real ID

Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense, the Global War on Terror, and Tsunami Relief 2005 (H.R. 1268)

The Real ID Act is a federal law that sets minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. It aims to improve the security of these documents to prevent identity theft and terrorism, particularly after the 9/11 attacks. Beginning May 7, 2025, you'll need a REAL ID-compliant license or ID to board domestic flights and access certain secure federal facilities.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

Key Features of the Real ID Act:

  • Increased Security:

The Act mandates that state-issued licenses and IDs meet stricter security standards, including improved production techniques, enhanced data verification, and stronger fraud prevention measures.

  • Reduced Risk of Counterfeiting:

By enforcing higher standards, the Act aims to make it more difficult to counterfeit or forge state-issued identification documents.

  • Standardized Identification:

The Act seeks to establish a more uniform system for identifying individuals for federal purposes, improving coordination between states and federal agencies.

  • Acceptable Forms of Identification:

Starting May 7, 2025, a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or ID card, along with other approved forms of identification like passports, are the only acceptable forms of identification for boarding domestic flights and accessing secure federal facilities.

  • Enforcement Deadlines:

While the initial enforcement date has been extended, it's crucial to understand that the deadline for full REAL ID compliance is approaching.

How to Obtain a REAL ID:

  • You can apply for a REAL ID when you get a new driver's license or state ID card, or you can renew your existing license with the REAL ID designation.

  • Specific requirements for obtaining a REAL ID may vary by state, but generally, you'll need to provide proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and proof of residency.

  • You can typically find information on how to apply for a REAL ID on your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website, as mentioned in the Virginia DMV website.

Why is the Real ID Act important?

  • Enhanced Security:

The Act significantly strengthens the security of state-issued identification documents, making it harder for criminals and terrorists to exploit vulnerabilities.

  • Improved Identification:

The Act establishes a more consistent and reliable system for identifying individuals, especially for official purposes like domestic travel and accessing federal facilities.

  • Protection of National Security:

By raising identification standards, the Act helps protect national security and prevent individuals from using fake or fraudulent IDs to access sensitive areas or engage in illegal activities.
